Mary Karaim

Mary Karaim, 98, of Rainycrest Home for the Aged, 550 Osborne Street, Fort Frances, Ontario, passed away at her residence on Monday, May 7, 2001.

She was born on April 11, 1903, in Ukraina, Manitoba to the late Samuel and Frances Zurkowski. She was the fifth child born in a family of eleven. On February 16, 1922, Mary was united in marriage to Eugene Karaim. For a short time they resided in Kenora ad Fort Frances and finally settled in Rainy River.

They had two daughters, Leona and husband Nick Dzulynski of Hamilton, Ontario; and Patricia and husband Ernie Ross of Dryden, Ontario.

Mary was a member of the Greek Orthodox Church and Ladies Auxiliary.

Mary will always be remembered for her kindness and generosity. She was an avid gardener and a wonderful cook.

She was predeceased by her husband Eugene Karaim on August 8, 1974; her sisters Katherine, Anne, Helen, Pauline and Jenny; and by her brothers Michael, William, Nick, Tony and Jim.

Mary is also survived by her four grandchildren; Dianne and husband David Pruitt of Burlington, Ont., Darcy and husband Jim Parsons of Fort Frances, Ont., Brian Ross and wife Maureen of Waterloo, Ont. and Donna and husband Steve Katchorik of Mississauga, Ont.; six great grandchildren, David, Scott, Kate, Emily, Abby and Danya; and by numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Thursday, May 10, 2001 at 10 a.m. at St. George's Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Fort Frances, Ontario. Father Jaroslaw Buciora officiated the interment at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Rainy River, Ontario.

Visitation was held from 7 until 9 p.m., Wednesday evening at the Green Funeral Home; with prayers offered at 7:30 p.m.

The active pallbearers were Ilio Gushulak, John Kowalchuk, Nick Grynol, John Demianiw, John Rogoza and John Law.
