Lack of good sportsmanship

To the Editor:
On the night of February 1st at the Lake of the Woods Bears hockey game against Warroad I was impressed by three attitudes; the incredible support of Baudette and now Rainy River fans, the inability of the referees to control a varsity game so that the players had a safe environment in which to play and the shocking unsportsmanlike behaviour displayed when a player was given a check and/or injured.
My family and I witnessed the lack of good sportsmanlike conduct when a player was down, the heckling, jeering and foul language that was displayed was appalling.
Are good manners out of style? Does one check their manners at the arena door and adopt a boorish and vulgar attitude.
Rivalry can be good. Teams should spur one another on to excellence and good plays should be applauded by all.
I would like to encourage fans from our area to have a positive attitude of respect and display good sportsmanship.
Hockey is such a great game. Let’s be great fans!
Yours truly,
