Photos full of memories
Dear Sir:
With Veteran’s Day approaching. I’d like to share some photos with you. My uncle, Carl A. Westberg from Bergland, was killed in action on August 29, 1944, in Normandy, France. The black and white photo is the one my grandmother received at the time of his death and the other shows how it looks today.
In 1998 my daughter and I travelled to Normandy, France to look for his grave. Expecting to find the original crude cross in a base of concrete, we were pleasantly surprised to see the existing cemetery, neat and well kept.
It was a very emotional experience in that we were the first family members to visit his grave since his death over 50 years ago.
Feel free to use any photos or excerpts from this letter, if you’d like it to appear in the Rainy River Record around Veteran’s Day. There’s probably others in your area that have a loved one buried in the Canadian Military Cemetery in Normandy, France.
Sincerely,
Lee (Mood) Stapleton
