Pinewood girl holding garage sale to raise money for diabetes

News Release

Madison Brown age 10 was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes last spring. She has had to become accustomed to frequent blood glucose testing (finger pokes), Carbohydrate counting, and has to inject herself with insulin on a daily basis. This is now a routine part of her life. She participated in diabetic Camp in Kenora, Ont last summer and is going again this year, which is a wonderful experience for young people with this disease. These camps are just 1 of the important things that the Canadian Diabetes Associationn does for people living with diabetes across the country. Madison's family was planning to have a garage sale this year and thought this would be a great opportunity to join the Diabetes Summer Surge, a coast-to-coast movement in support of the Canadian Diabetes Association, to help fight this disease and come closer to a cure!
Facts about Diabetes in Canada:
-Presently more than 3 million Canadians are living with diabetes and a further 6 million Canadians have prediabetes. Each and every day, another 480 Canadians are diagnosed with the disease.
-This summer alone, more than 43,000 Canadians will be diagnosed with diabetes and may see their life expectancy reduced by as much as 15 years
-The cost of diabetes has doubled over the past decade to 12.2 billion and will continue to escalate over the next decade by an additional $4.7 billion

Madison's mom, Laurie Brown is a Rregistered Nurse who works at the Rainy River Health Centre, she has seen first hand how this disease can affect peoples lives and health if not kept controlled. The Brown family will also be providing some educational material about diabetes at their event. So come on out, you may find a treasure you can use and also support a great cause. The kids will be selling refreshments, and there will be a thank-you for your support attendance prize. Watch for ballons at driveway! It will take place on Saturday, August 14th at Laurie & Troy Brown residence on Hwy 11, Pinewood, On from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
