This Saturday three years of work will be celebrated when Lake of the Woods Township officially opens its new park!
The grand opening of Oscar’s Bay Beach park will take place at 11 a.m. with a ribbon cutting and speeches by dignitaries.
LoW Clerk Pat Giles said the project began three years ago when it purchased land down Frenchmans Rock Road. Phase 1 involved developing land 150 from the beach inland. “We cleared and filled and planted grass,” said Giles. They also erected a picnic pavilion and washrooms on site. An access road was also built. This phase cost $250,000 all of which came from the Ontario Infrastructure program.
Phase 2 saw a further 150 feet of land developed at a cost of $180,000. This phase was shared 1/3 federal, 1/3 provincial and 1/3 Low Twp. dollars. It involved building trails and the installation of playground equipment which was put in this past week. They have also ordered permanent barbecue pits for the park, but they have not arrived as of yet.
After the ribbon cutting there will be a free community barbecue at the park and everyone is invited to attend the event!
The park is a day use facility and has proven to be quite popular so far. Down the road there may be more development there as “We still have quite of bit of land there,” said Giles.
To get to the park travel north from Sleeman on Hwy. 621 to Frenchman’s Rock Road. Turn west on it and follow it to the end.
