The Town of Rainy River has been deemed a successful candidate to receive funding through the Ministry of Health Promotion to introduce an After School Program to our community. The Town is in partnership with Riverview Elementary School, the Northwestern Health Unit, and the Rainy River Recreation Centre which all have input in the development, implementation, and operation of the program.

The Ministry of Health Promotion has developed a “Child and Youth Health and Wellness After- School Strategy” which focuses on supporting comprehensive after-school programming in specific priority neighbourhoods where school aged children can benefit from programs focused on physical activity, healthy eating and nutrition, as well as wellness and personal health education.

The after-school time frame not only provides an opportunity for participants to develop and learn in a fun environment, it offers families a safe and secure location for their children to take part in youth-focused activities.
The program will also foster a positive environment which is culturally diverse and free from discrimination. Participants will feel engaged, respected, involved, and connected to their peers in an atmosphere that builds self-esteem, resilience and self-reliance.

The program is at full capacity with 20 students registered between the ages of 6-12 and is scheduled to run every Tues-Thurs from 3:15-5:30 for the remainder of the school year. The start date has been set for October 5th!
Some potential activities for the program are: roller blading, ice skating, sliding/tobogganing, curling, snow shoeing, hiking, cooking classes, cultural awareness, cross country skiing, gardening, bullying awareness, dance classes, assorted arts & crafts, and MUCH MORE!!!
