The Rainy River District School Board is pleased to announce that the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) has selected Sturgeon Creek School to receive the Dr. Bette M. Stephenson Recognition of Achievement. Representatives from the school have been invited to attend a recognition ceremony in Toronto, on Monday, November 8, 2010. EQAO selected the school based on the community’s dedication to student achievement and the use of provincial assessment results to improve student learning. Sturgeon Creek School is one of only twenty schools to receive this honour, which acknowledges the school’s leadership, positive attitude and sincere effort to help every child succeed.
“Using the available data to monitor each student’s progress and plan for their continued success is like the rubber meeting the road. We have the data but we need to use it effectively to ensure the continued success of our students,” said Kendall Olsen, Principal, Sturgeon Creek School. Communication between staff members at the school has been
critical to the success the school has enjoyed. “There is great communication among the staff and their doors are always open to ask for assistance or to share strategies. This ongoing communication and willingness to work together has been very positive and is reflected in the ongoing success of our students,” said Krista Williams, Student
Achievement Teacher, Sturgeon Creek School.
Located in the Township of Chapple, Sturgeon Creek Public School serves 170 students from kindergarten to Grade 8.
Most of these students live in rural communities where farming, logging and mining are the main sources of employment. The school population is predominantly English speaking.
This recognition program was established as a tribute to Dr. Bette M. Stephenson’s lifelong commitment and contribution to education and public service. As minister of both Education and Colleges and Universities from 1978 to 1985 and as an original member of EQAO’s Board of Directors, Dr. Stephenson has made an enormous contribution to public education in the province.
