Riverview teams begin season on a good note!
By Mark Jodoin

Riverview’s volleyball teams started their competitive season last weekend at the annual Atikokan Elementary School Volleyball Tournament. On Saturday, October 30 four teams (gr. 7 girls, gr. 7 boys, gr. 8 girls, and gr. 8 boys) took part in their first volleyball tournament of the year. All four teams managed wins through the day. Both the gr. 7 boy’s and gr. 8 girl’s teams missed the semi-finals by one game while the gr. 7 girls and gr. 8 boys both made it to the medal rounds.
The gr. 7 girls ended up losing to a very good team from St. Francis School in the semi-final game but came back with an excellent game in the bronze medal match and beat Robert Moore School for the 3rd place finish.
The gr. 8 boy’s team also did very well. Although they started their day a bit shaky losing their first set to St. Francis, they improved as the day went on. After 12 games in the round robin section of the tournament, they ended up in the semi-finals against the home team of Atikokan High School. Taking the set two games to none, put them in the finals against St. Francis. Their games see-sawed back and forth, with St. Francis taking the first game, but Riverview rebounded and took the second. St. Francis ended up coming back in the third game which eventually won them the gold medals.
The teams have several more tournaments with the regionals being held in Fort Frances on November 27th. Once again the regionals are open to one boy’s and one girl’s team from each school in the district.
