In the clutter we found it
Some people detest clutter.
About 20 years ago a colleague of mine, Julie Nordine, publisher of the Williams (MN) Northern Light and I traded papers for a week.
It was part of National Newspaper Week and we were doing it to draw attention to our industry.
Julie detests clutter and when she took over my desk for a week, she proceeded to remove my clutter. All my strategically placed piles of paper were taken from the desk and placed under it where no one could see it. Needless to say it was one of probably only a half-dozen times in 22 years it was cleaned off (two of those were to move the office).
I myself love to keep things somewhat cluttered, both at work and at home. You never know when someone is going to come looking for something and I will need to go to my clutter to fetch it for them.
Last week that happened. Former Record Publisher Len Ricci came in looking for some thicker border tape. At first we found a few stragglier rolls of the thin stuff, but that was not what he needed.
I asked the Times, the Baudette Region and Julie (who runs several papers now) and all had dispensed with all of their border tape in the name of cleaning.
Well I began searching junk drawers in the office and other nooks and crannies. Eventually some was discovered in a coworker's office. Thankfully we did not throw it out even though we have not used it for over a decade! It was like finding gold!
Pack ratting has paid off for us again!
–Until then,
