Mabel Antonia Gate, 93

The family of Mabel Antonia Gate is sad to announce her passing on February 9, 2004 at La Verendrye hospital in Fort Frances, Ontario. Mabel was in her 94th year. She was born December 19, 1910 in Bergland, Ontario, the only daughter of James Olaf Broman and Anna Christina Olsen. Mabel lived her entire life in Bergland with the exception of the last 7 years, when she resided in Fort Frances at the Home for the Aged. Mabel met Cecil Walter Gate in Sleeman. She married Cecil on August 12, 1929 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. They settled in Bergland and raised a large family of 4 daughters and 8 sons. She was a loving dedicated mother. She was active in her church and community. She served as a secretary in Relief Society and a Sunday School teacher. She was a lifetime member of the Women’s Institute. War years in the 1940’s were busy for the Institute. They knitted socks, sewed pajamas and made up packages for the soldiers overseas.
Grandma Mabel was a great cook. In later years she worked as a cook in the tourist industry. Many will remember her pies and cinnamon rolls. She loved to travel and read. Writing letters and compiling family history was one of her favourite pass times. Her photo collection was amazing. Besides her own family, Mabel, with the help of her mother, raised her brother’s 5 children when he passed away in 1950. At the passing of her daughter Doris, Mabel and Cecil raised her 7 children. She willingly accepted this responsibility. One of her greatest joys was having her children and grandchildren visit. They learned much from her and her loving ways.
Mabel is predeceased by her parents, James and Christina Broman, her brother William, her husband Cecil, 2 sons, Gary and Ronald, her daughter Doris, 4 grandchildren; Don Carswell, Melanie Mason and Nicole Gate, and Shirley McNally and great grandsons; Filip Johnson and Dane Wood. She is survived by her children Anne Carswell (Joe), Charles Gate (Dorothy), Larry Gate (Dianne), Bill Gate (Caroline), Joyce Jensen (Dell), Fred Gate (Nancy), Alfred Gate (Sheila), Keith Gate (Donna), Elaine Beyak (Don) and Daughter-in-law Mert (Ron). She is also survived by her 18 grandsons, 20 granddaughters, 78 great grandchildren, and 8 great great grandchildren.
