Over this past weekend, the Riverview Royals Girl’s Basketball team took part in the Regional Basketball Championships in Fort Frances. Their hopes were for a third championship in a row.
In round robin play, they started out with a tight game against Crossroads which went down to the final minutes when the Royals pulled away from a tied game with 3 or 4 quick baskets. Their next game was against Atikokan High School who weren’t ready for the quick passing, powerful rebounding and consistent layups of the Riverview girls. Riverview took this game quite handily. This led to semi final matchups between a much improved Sturgeon Creek team and the Royals while Crossroads would tangle with St. Francis School from Fort Frances.
Sturgeon Creek and Riverview had a see-saw battle which eventually came down to the last few minutes of the game when Riverview finally pulled away, winning the game by a few baskets. In the other semi-final game, St. Francis and Crossroads played a tight game for the first half, but the depth and size difference proved to be too much for the Crossroads team. The bronze medal eventually went to Crossroads after they defeated a determined, but tired Sturgeon Creek team.
The finals between St. Francis and Riverview proved to be a nail-biter right to the end. The Royals, although outsized and outnumbered, played excellent basketball keeping the score close throughout the game and found themselves leading by one point with only 4 minutes left. Unfortunately, having only two substitutes on the bench proved to be too much for the girls to stay with the St. Francis team who pulled away and won the game by two baskets. Congratulations to the Royals for an excellent season. Well done Meghan Vogan (captain), Kenzie Godin, Becky Cunningham, Bethany Lauzon, Hayley Arpin, Kendra Moen, and Chalina Abraham.
