NDP say other parties don't care about NWO

Queen’s Park –In the Legislature today, Liberal and Conservative MPPs signaled they don’t care about northerners’ concerns and voted down a motion by NDP Leader Andrea Horwath that calls for proper consultations on issues affecting Northern Ontario.
“Today we asked all Ontario MPPs to commit to a consultation process so that decisions about Northern Ontario are made in the North. But it’s clear the Liberal and Tory MPPs have no interest in listening to Northerners,” said Horwath.
Over the past eight years, the government has denied Northern Ontario proper consultations on critical issues affecting the North, including: the Far North Act, Wood Re-Allocation processes, Narcotics Safety Legislation, Forestry Tenure Reform, and the unfair HST. What’s worse is today, the government introduced a time allocation motion on Bill 151, the Forest Tenure Act, to cut debate on this important piece of legislation.
“Northern Ontario will not succeed if Liberal and Tory MPPs continue to persistently ignore the concerns of northerners,” said Horwath.
Timmins – James Bay MPP Gilles Bisson agreed with the NDP Leader saying: “Under the watch of the Liberal government, the wood allocation of communities like Wawa, Sioux Lookout and Dubreuilville is being taken. This carries severe consequences and job losses. It’s shocking that the government didn’t bother to consult the very people who are most affected by changes to forestry policy.”
“Northern Ontario is going down the same path again with the government’s proposed forestry tenure reform which the Liberal government is refusing to travel to Northern Ontario” said Bisson.
Kenora-Rainy River MPP Howard Hampton said the resources of Northern Ontario offer global opportunities, but development has to start with northerners for the benefit of northerners. “Any forest tenure policy that results in Ontario’s publicly owned crown forest being sold off to the highest bidders outside Ontario is bad policy,” said Hampton.
Nickel Belt MPP France Gélinas summed up the NDP view: “The government has separated Northerners from the decision-making process at Queen’s Park and instead has chosen to call the shots behind closed doors. Northerners deserve the power that allows us to control our own destiny.”
Opposition Day Motion:
Ms. Horwath – That, in the opinion of this House, the McGuinty Government has failed to adequately consult Northern Ontarians, their communities, industries and First Nations on issues of critical importance to the region’s future. The decision not to hold public hearings on Bill 151 in the North and the same lack of consultation on the part of the McGuinty Government, in cooperation with the Harper Government, to impose the HST demonstrates a lack of respect for Northern Ontario. We call on the McGuinty Government to commit to a consultation process that ensures that decisions about Northern Ontario are made in the North and not dictated by Queen’s Park. Addressed to the Premier.
