The captain on Rainy River Community College’s 2010-11 national champion women’s hockey team will be continuing a career on the ice beyond her sophomore season.
University of Manitoba women’s hockey head coach Jon Rempel announced April 18th that Brenley Anderson is one of six players the Bisons have recruited for 2011-12.
Anderson, 19, a 5-10 forward, was named the “player of the year” after the Voyageurs won the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Division II national championship last month for the third time in four seasons.
In 2010-11, Anderson, a Rainy River, Ontario native, led the ACHA in scoring with 70 points (46 goals and 24 assists) in 21 games.
In her first season with the Voyageurs, Anderson was an assistant captain when she scored 30 points (19 goals and 11 assists).
During her high school career, she was the team MVP twice and captain for four years with the Lake of the Woods Bears during 2004-09.
“Brenley is making the jump to Canada West play after two years of junior college. She brings size, strength and offensive punch to the Bison program,” said Rempel. “Her creativity and ability to score at the junior college level will help her make an impact at this level and our program is looking forward to seeing what she can do in a Bison uniform.”
RRCC women’s hockey head coach Evan Amdahl said Anderson’s recruitment to play for the University of Manitoba next season is “great for our program.”
Amdahl said Anderson worked on her ice speed between her freshman and sophomore seasons to improve her hockey skills.
He said Bemidji State University had also been interested in recruiting Anderson, though she would have faced having to red-shirt for next season instead of being able to play for the Bisons in 2011-12.
