Students delivered outstanding speeches on a wide variety of subject matter to educators, family, peers, and community members.
The top three winners included two Rainy River District School Board students, and one Northwest Catholic District School Board student. Donald Young School student, Caleb Dueck, won first place for his speech on why snakes deserve to be liked; St. Francis School student, Sophie Potvin-Begin, took second place for her speech on pairs skating; and Crossroads School student, Reece Jones, was third with his speech about one of his hobbies.
The judges were Natasha Shack, Jorge Ruppenstein, and Doug Anderson while the questioners were Michelle Mosbeck, and Heather Latter.
Public speaking can be a powerful tool to use for purposes such as motivation, influence, persuasion, or simply entertainment. Rainy River District School Board Literacy Coordinator, Diane Rumbolt-Carlson, recognized all participating students for their demonstrated skills in public speaking, and the evening was a celebration of all the student talent that there is in within the District. “I am just amazed at the caliber of speeches each year and the variety of topics on which contestants speak”, she said. “The confidence they display in public speaking is remarkable and will certainly serve them well in the future, whatever their career path may be.”
All the contestants received certificates for their participation, and prizes were awarded to the top three winners.
