News Release
O.P.P.

Beware of scam
The Rainy River District Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has recently received several complaints from local citizens that an unknown male has been calling them offering assistance to fix their computer. The male is calling and stating that he works for Microsoft and that they have received an error message from their computer. He is further stating that he will be able to fix the computer if he is granted permission to access the computer from a remote location. It has been determined that this is not a real representative of Microsoft and that members of the public should not give any personal information to persons calling them if they are not sure if the call is official.

The OPP reminds all members of the community that identity theft is continuously evolving and that criminals are thinking of new ways to obtain your personal information.
Persons who may have experienced this type of situation are urged to contact PHONEBUSTERS at 1-888-495-8501 or via email at HYPERLINK “mailto:info@antifraudcentre.ca” info@antifraudcentre.ca .
