Still room in summer programs

News Release
RRDSB

Summer learning programs give students the ability to propel learning gains, the opportunity to prevent learning loss, and the chance to master material they may have struggled with during the previous school year. The Rainy River District School Board’s summer learning programs offer an opportunity to help bridge the achievement gap, and the opportunity gap, for both students and educators.
Every morning from Monday to Friday on August 2 to 19, students who attended Grades 1, 2, or 3 can greatly benefit from the Board’s Summer Literacy Camp held at Donald Young School where they can continue to exercise their brains and practice literacy skills they learned in school. Summer Literacy Camp provides children with a variety of activities designed to enhance their literacy skills and prepare for the new school year. Space is still available, and you can register your child for this fun and exciting learning opportunity by contacting Donald Young School at 482-2271 on August 2, 2011.
On August 24 and 25, 2011, in partnership with the Ontario Teachers’ Federation (OTF), the Rainy River District School Board will present a professional learning event, Going Green, for teachers. The OTF Going Green Conference will offer a variety of workshops, including 10 Minute Field Trips, Waste Management in Schools, Taking Math Outdoors, Soil and Worm Composting, Rocks and Minerals, Treasure Hunt using GPS, Plants and Animals,
Taking Drama Outside and Environmental Art. Participants will select specific workshops that will be geared to either Primary, Junior, Intermediate or Senior teachers. To register go to the Ontario Teacher’s Federation website at www.otffeo.on.ca and look under “Summer Programs”. The School Board will reimburse the $50 registration fee for the first 20 Rainy River District School Board teachers registered. For more information, contact Angela Petsnick at 275-5790.
Other summer learning opportunities include secondary level programs that allow students to earn credits toward their high school diploma; Ministry of Education professional development conferences for system and school leaders, and for Special Education staff; and a variety of community organization camps, programs, and activities for children.
The Rainy River District School Board encourages everyone to fill the beautiful summer days with learning and with great memories.
