If you are a parent of a child with diabetes that will be attending school in the fall or who participates in organized activities such as scouts or hockey, the Canadian Diabetes Association has a new “Kids With Diabetes In Your Care” resource available on its website diabetes.ca.
The kit provides basic information to people who provide care to children with diabetes, including parents/guardians, school staff, childcare workers, coaches, youth workers and camp staff. Its purpose is to help ensure the safety and well-being of students with diabetes.
The kit offers a number of educational materials to help caregivers better understand diabetes, its treatment, and its management. It also includes resources for parents of children with diabetes so that they can better prepare their child’s school and teachers to help effectively manage their child’s disease in a classroom setting.
“Some youth with diabetes have told us that they have been prohibited from participating in intramural sports because of their diabetes,” says Regional Director Suzanne Sterling. “Another one of our volunteers tells us they were automatically made the scorekeeper as the teacher was afraid to let her participate in sports activities.”
The “Kids With Diabetes In Your Care” tool kit will help ease any concerns there may be and help illustrate how it is possible for children with diabetes to enjoy full inclusion in school and other recreational activities.
If you have a child with diabetes who attends school or participates in any organized activities you are urged to download this kit and review the appropriate materials with your child’s care givers/supervisors and coaches.
