Police seize drugs in Fort Frances

On August 21, 2011 at 10:50 pm, officers of the Rainy River District OPP conducted a routine traffic stop of a vehicle at the 400 block of Kings Highway in Fort Frances. The vehicle stop revealed that the male driver from Manitoba was prohibited from driving and was currently serving a court order stemming from other criminal offences. Subsequently, officers continued their investigation into the matter and located over twenty four pounds of marihuana inside the vehicle. Both the male driver and female passenger were arrested, the vehicle was seized and both individuals were transported to Fort Frances OPP Detachment. Twenty four pounds of marihuana is estimated to have a street value of over $60,000.
Garrett SIGURDSON, age 26 years of Winnipeg, Manitoba has been charged with Possession of Marihuana for the Purpose of Trafficking, two counts of Failing to Comply with a Court Order and Driving without a Licence. He has been remanded into custody pending a bail hearing on August 24, 2011 at Fort Frances Provincial Court.
Laura MATTHEWS, age 27 years of Winnipeg, Manitoba has been charged with Possession of Marihuana for the Purpose of Trafficking. She appeared before Fort Frances Provincial Court on August 22, 2011 and was released from custody on a Recognizance. Her next court appearance will be September 26, 2011 in Fort Frances.
