Joseph Edward Asselin, 73

Joseph Edward Asselin age 73 of 36 Rawn Road Atikokan, Ontario passed away peacefully at the Atikokan General Hospital on Saturday August 9, 2003.
He was born April 12th, 1930 in Dilke Township (Pinewood), Ontario. Ed married Greta Miniely on September 4, 1953 and together they came to Atikokan in 1954 where they raised their family. Ed worked at Step Rock Iron Mines for 27 years. Following the mine closures he worked in the mines in Pickle Lake, ON and Ignace, ON, keeping his home in Atikokan. Ed could always be found in his garage where he spent his spare time “tinkering”. Ed is survived by his wife Greta, son Ron (Sue) Asselin of Atikokan, son Randy Asselin of Thunder Bay, ON and daughter Cheryl (Kevin) Shmyr of Atikokan, ON, grandchildren - Nicole (Mark) Bingham of Atikokan, Angela (Shawn) Anderson of Atikokan, Amanda (Aaron) Johnson of Atikokan, Amanda’s dad Todd James and Michelle Asselin of Red Rock, ON, great grandchildren Marni Shawnte and Cael. He is also survived by his brothers Roland Asselin of Rainy River, ON, Leo (Rose) of Saskatoon, Sask., Rene (Bev) of Thunder Bay, ON, sister Irene (Al) Lougheed of Thunder Bay, ON and sister-in-law Sherri Asselin of Fort Frances ON. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents David and Albertine Asselin, brother Dona Asselin, brother Sid Asselin, sister Lola Gaudette, and sister Rose Wilson.
Cremation has taken place to be followed by a private family service at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations to the Atikokan, General Hospital, Heart & Stroke Foundation or the Thunder Bay Humane Society would be greatly appreciated.
