Local duo perform well at badminton trials in Winnipeg
Several youth travelled to Winnipeg on the weekend to compete in the Winnipeg Junior City Open & Western Canadian Team Badminton Championships Try-Outs and had very good results.
They competed in 2 divisions - U14 and U16 in singles doubles and mixed doubles. Top 2 from each of the singles events made the provincial team and will represent Manitoba at the West. Can. Bad. Champ. in January in Winnipeg. (competing against BC, AB, and Sask)
Hayley Arpin finished 1st in the U14 Girls singles. She went undefeated (3-0 in the round robin and then won the finals). This qualifies her to play in the WCC for team Manitoba.
Hayley and Skylar Arpin finished 2nd in their pool for the U16 Girls Doubles, then lost to the eventual champions in the semi-finals.
Hayley and Jackson Arpin lost in the Consolation Final for the U14 Mixed Doubles.
Jackson (as a 9 year old playing in the U14 division) lost in the D final - but he did win 1 game.
Jackson and his partner from Fort Frances (Aaron Bujold - 11 years old) won the consolation final in the U14 Boys Doubles.
Skylar won the C event in the U16 Girls Singles - She lost her 1 match to the #2 seeded player (a VERY close 2 sets to 1) then won her next 3 matches to win the C.
Skylar and her partner from Fort Frances (Taylor Whitehead) lost in the Consolation Final for the U16 Mixed Doubles.
Next step for Hayley - Being an Ontario Resident, The Manitoba Badminton Assoc needs to apply for clearance to allow Hayley to compete. Ryan Giesbrecht (Executive Director of Badminton Manitoba) said that it should be no problem and Hayley will be on the provincial team once the process is over.
This will involve Sunday practices every second weekend in Winnipeg and a 3 day Identified Player Program camp with International level coaching over the Christmas Holidays.
Chase Baduik of Fort Frances was the other local player competing.
