The Lake of the Woods chapter of Let’s Go Fishing With Seniors recently wrapped up their fifth season. And, according to Chapter President Bill Mouw, it was a very successful year. “We were able to take over 350 people on fishing and boating trips,” explained Mouw. “We had 42 trips on the pontoon, which is about the same number of trips as we did during our last two seasons.”
Most of the folks who took trips on the specially-designed pontoon boat were from the Baudette/Rainy River area, but groups of seniors from Warroad and Roseau also participated. Several volunteers from the Warroad area were trained to operate the boat this year. Those folks are a welcome addition to the pool of volunteer guides and first mates.
Let’s Go Fishing With Seniors is funded by donations and fund-raising events. Operations are conducted by a committee of local volunteers. The focus of the program in the Lake of the Woods area is to provide fishing and boating opportunities for seniors that are age 55 and over, and for individuals with special needs.
According to Mouw, people have been very supportive of the Let’s Go Fishing program. “We have received generous support from many agencies, organizations and individuals,” said Mouw. “The support from our community was evident this fall when we had a very successful fish-fry fundraiser. “
