RR man arrested at Sprague border

December 20, 2011, Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officers at the border crossing in Sprague, MB, searched the vehicle of a returning Canadian resident. During the search, CBSA officers found one undeclared handgun and one prohibited over-capacity (15-round) magazine inside the vehicle.
At approximately 11:35 a.m., Dec. 20, 2011, Steinbach RCMP were contacted by the Canada Border Service Agency (CBSA) at the Sprague Port of entry advising they were detaining a male subject for Smuggling or attempting to smuggle goods which are prohibited, controlled or regulated under the Customs Act.
Further investigation by the Steinbach RCMP revealed that the man had failed to declare importing a prohibited weapon (firearm) into Canada.
A 66-year-old man from Rainy River, Ontario, was charged with importing a prohibited weapon into Canada and five other firearms related offences under the Criminal Code of Canada. He was released from custody and is to appear in court on February 2, 2012 in Steinbach.
Police continue to investigate.
The handgun and magazine were seized and the driver of the vehicle was arrested and turned over to Steinbach RCMP. His next scheduled court appearance is February 2, 2012.
Both CBSA and the RCMP would not name the suspect.
