Hayley Arpin, 13, of Rainy River, competed in the Western Canadian Team Badminton Championships (WCTBC) over the weekend in Winnipeg.
Arpin made the team last fall when she and her sister, brother and another boy from Fort Frances attended tryouts. At that event she finished first in the under 14 girls division. The only hurdle she had to clear was being that she was from Ontario she would have to receive clearance from the Manitoba Badminton Association to compete for Team Manitoba. She did get that nod and over the weekend participated in the WCTBC.
It involved three days of competition against teams from British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and two teams from Manitoba.
Hayley competed in 14 matches. Eight were singles, four doubles and two mixed-doubles. Of those she won eight.
All the team members results are combined and her team ended up winning bronze overall!
Her dad, Guy Arpin said this Monday, “The quality of badminton was unbelievable at this event! Awesome to watch and be a part of. Great experience.”a
