RRDSB raises awareness about concussions
News Release
RRDSB
Supporting a student recovering from a concussion requires a collaborative approach among parents, school professionals and health care providers. The Board recently established a Student Concussion Protocol procedure, and as a part of the educational effort, fact sheets were developed for coaches, for parents, and for students. The fact sheets provide easy-to-use information about recognizing and responding to a potential concussion, and are available on the Board’s website at HYPERLINK “http://www.rrdsb.com” www.rrdsb.com.
The Rainy River District School Board is committed to providing a safe learning environment, and to the safety of all students while participating in physical activities and athletic competitions as part of the co-instructional program. The Board recognizes that sports and recreational activities promote physical health, and that there are risks involved with any physical activity. Even what seems to be a mild bump to the head can be serious and result in a concussion.
Concussions are brain injuries that change the way the brain normally works. These injuries are often caused by a blow or bump to the head, but can also occur from a blow to the body that causes a whiplash effect. The signs and symptoms of a concussion may be physical, cognitive (thinking and reasoning), or emotional. Medical attention should be received at the time of the injury since symptoms can appear days or even weeks later. Proper recognition and response to concussion can prevent further injury and help with recovery.
The Rainy River District School Board values its partnership with parents and community members to provide a healthy and safe learning environment. The Board’s Student Concussion Protocol procedure and concussion fact sheets will help parents, coaches, and students to make appropriate in-the-moment decisions that enhance student safety.
