Police lay several impaired dirving charges in the region

OPP were kept busy over the past two weekend as three individuals were charged with impaired driving related offences.
On February 3, 2012, at approximately 3:46 am, Wendel Garret SMITH, age 21 years of Northwest Bay was charged with Having Over 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood (Over 80 mgs) contrary to section 253(1)b of the Criminal Code following a vehicle stop on Scott Street in Fort Frances. His vehicle was impounded and he received the mandatory 90 day licence suspension pending a Fort Frances court appearance on March 26, 2012.
On February 4, 2012 around 2:36 am, Jenna RIVAS-TORRES, age 22 of Seine River First Nation was charged with Over 80 mgs after her vehicle was stopped by OPP officers on the 400 block of Kings Highway in Fort Frances. Police officers were alerted to her vehicle when they observed it travelling in excess of the speed limit. In addition to the criminal charge, she has also been charged with driving without a licence. The vehicle was impounded and her court appearance will be in Fort Frances on March 5, 2012.
Furthermore, on February 5, 2012 at approximately 2:57 am, Rainy River District OPP officers attended the Rainy River Canada Border Services building at the request of border officers. Leslie MORRISON, age 55 years of Baudette, Minnesota has attempted to cross into Canada when border officers noticed signs of impairment. The male was arrested by officers and transported to the Fort Frances OPP Detachment for breath tests. His vehicle was impounded, he has been charged with Over 80 mgs and his court appearance is set for March 8, 2012 in Rainy River.
Impaired driving is 100% avoidable. Make the decision to not drive before you start consuming alcohol. Preventing impaired driving is everyone’s responsibility.
One male driver was charged for impaired driving after being stopped at a RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) program early Saturday morning. 48-year old Mario ZINKIEWICZ of Kenora was arrested after failing a roadside test and taken to the Kenora OPP for breath tests. ZINKIEWICZ is to appear in Kenora court on March 15th, 2012.
Another RIDE program on Sunday, February 12th 2012 resulted in a 35 year Kenora man being charged with impaired driving after failing a roadside test. Micheal ROCKOLA of Kenora will attend Kenora court on March 15th, 2012.
A traffic stop by police early Sunday morning on Ninth St North in Kenora resulted in a 24 year old woman being charged for impaired driving. Police determined the woman had been drinking and after failing a roadside test, she was arrested and transported to the Kenora OPP. As a result, Kelsey BLACKHAWK of Whitefish Bay FNT has been charged with impaired driving. BLACKHAWK will attend Kenora court on March 15th, 2012.
On Sunday, February 12, 2012 at approximately 1:30 am the Kenora OPP attended the Township of Nestor Falls after a Treaty Three Police vehicle was struck by an impaired driver. The female driver was arrested by the Treaty Three Police at the scene and later turned over to the OPP. As a result of the investigation, 29 year old Kelly Lynn MAJOR of Manitou Rapids has been charged with impaired driving. MAJOR is to appear in Kenora court on March 29, 2012.
