QUEEN’S PARK – New Democrat Leader Andrea Horwath introduced the first of a series of budget proposals coming from consultations with Ontarians. “Ontario’s not going to prosper if households are falling further behind,” said Horwath. “People tell us we need a balanced approach to balance. If we have to choose between a working mom who needs help with the kids or a CEO who needs help with a seven-figure paycheque, let’s help that Mom.”
New Democrats are proposing protecting 4,000 childcare spaces to keep parents working, protecting ODSP, making 2 million home care hours available to keep seniors in their homes and taking HST off of home heating. In order to offset costs those Ontarians making more than half a million dollars would see a modest, two-percent income tax increase. “Instead of focussing on the challenges facing households, this Budget made them worse,” said Horwath. “Our proposal lets caregivers and parents keep working and contributing, it gives modest income families a tax cut, it helps people live in dignity and brings a dose of fairness to a Budget that’s missing it.” Since last week Ontarians have sent more than 5000 messages about the budget which form the backbone of Horwath’s proposals.
