Senior goaltender Doug Potts is the Hobey Baker Award winner for the Lake of the Woods hockey team for the 2011-12 season. That award and a host of others were made at the team’s annual awards banquet held at the school commons Sunday (April 1) night.
The Hobey Baker Award is the top honor given in local high school hockey. It generally goes to the senior player who best combines character, community service and participation in other school and community programs with hockey playing excellence.
Potts was among half a dozen seniors singled out for special recognition at the annual awards program. Others were James Schulz and Brock Debilzan from Lake of the Woods High School and Bryson Jasper, Kyle Godin and Cameron Elson of Rainy River High School. Potts, Schulz and Debilzan were at the banquet Sunday night to receive their awards.
Jasper of Rainy River was named the Most Valuable Player. He lead the team in scoring this past winter. Evan
Torgeson, a junior at Lake of the Woods High School, was named the Most Dedicated Player, and John Brown, also of Lake of the Woods, was named the Most Improved Player.
There were 33 players signed up for high school hockey this past winter, and many of them alternated between the varsity and junior varsity teams. Of those 33, only six did not appear in a junior varsity game; and only 7 did not get a chance at a varsity game as the season went along. Players ranged from 18 years down to 13 and covered the spectrum from high school seniors to eighth graders.
Coaches
Tim Lyon again served as junior varsity coach. He was assisted by Richard Boisvert.
Brett Johnson was head coach of the varsity team. He was assisted by Seth Schmitz.
Junior varsity honor
John Schell was named Junior Varsity Player of the Year
Varsity awards
Every one of the many varsity players was recognized during the program, as were managers and statisticians.
Student managers were Victor Silva and Nick Fish. Statistics people were Matti Pelland, McKenzie Pelach, Darian Dahl and Kendall Erickson.
