The Rainy River High School Girls Soccer team brought back NWOSSA gold on Friday.
The team earned a berth to the regional championships two weeks ago when they hosted NORWOSSA play and went undefeated. That week saw them beat Sioux Lookout 3-0 and later Red Lake 4-0.
That sent them to Chapleau, Ont. last week where they faced Ecole Secondaire Trillium. They had to win the best out of three games to advance to the All Ontarios (OFSAAs).
Slated for two games on Friday and a third game if necessary on Saturday, the RRHS Owls spread their wings and kicked some butt again! They beat Trillium 3-0 in the first gme and later in the day clinched a spot at the All Ontarios with a 5-0 win!
As word spread throughtout the community last Friday cheers went with everyone excited about the girls going to the big game! However, calendar watchers soon pointed out that there was a conflict in dates.
The All Ontario soccer championships are being held next Thursday, June 7, to June 9th in Southern Ontario. Prom is scheduled for June 9th at RRHS.
Many of the girls on the team were planning to attend prom and many have purchased dresses.
Due to other events taking place this weekend and the following week there was a great deal of uncertainty as to what to do with the event.
A call to RRHS Monday morning yielded no concrete decision.
Late Monday afternoon the Record was told by RRHS that there was going to be a meeting today (Tuesday) to decide what to do about the conflict.
One parent of a student that is not on the team but is planning to attend said he was told prom will go on a scheduled on the 9th with only 14 couples.
