Rainy River’s third annual Relay for Life was a huge success again this year raising $47,153.00!
Organizer Missy Jensen said that while it is not a record amount it is up over ten thousand dollars from last year! “The event was amazing again this year! It just keeps getting better and better!”
The number of teams this year was 13, up from 10 last year. All teams embraced the theme, “Around the World” choosing countries to represent.
Winning The Team Spirit Award (The Golden Crow Trophy) was Oscar’s Oddballs who all had hand made costumes and represented Egypt.
The top team raising the most money as a team was Team Cure-ious captained by Laurie Brown. “They always raise lots of money for the cause,” said Jensen on Monday. Their three year team total is $21,500.00 and their main inspiration is Mavis Brown.
Rounding out the top three teams were Linda’s Team Cured in 2nd with $6,609 and Rainy River Red Hat Society (Les Rouges Red) at $4,527.
The top individual money raiser was Linda Kreger of Team Linda Cured. She raised $855.00.
There were also three dream teams this year. These are teams that have to meet certain criteria. They were Team Cure-ious, Linda’s Team Cured and Les Rouges Red.
There were also 35 cancer survivors at the event. “This was the most we have ever had,” said Jensen.
New entertainment events included a spaghetti eating contest and a frozen t-shirt contest. “These and much more proved to be great fun for all in attendance,” said Jensen.
The event also set a new record for the most luminaries sold. “We sold 626, thanks to the hard work of the teams. We never topped 400 before!” said Jensen.
The three year total money raised to fight cancer at the Rainy River Relay for Life is $142,105!
Next year’s event is already in the works and the theme will be “Decades.”
