Woolsey crowned Emo Fair Queen

The annual Emo Fair queen pageant culminated last Thursday evening with 16-year-old Destiny Woolsey of Barwick being crowned.
The competition was fierce as the five vying for this year’s crown all had their strengths, as evidenced by how well they placed in the various categories, including banners, the interview, the fashion show, their parade float, and lastly the entertainment portion.
They all took home an award, with Jillian Gustafson being crowned First Princess and Karly Caul as Second Princess.
Cassie Wells was named Miss Congeniality (as voted on by her fellow contestants) while Jenny Hammond captured the Dorothy Bonot Memorial Award for leadership and a willingness to help others.
Before the crowning, the five performed their talents before a full room upstairs at the Emo Arena. Hammond went first, with a skit on how she gets ready for school.
With her sister acting as her arms, she bushed her teeth and put on her make-up.
Woolsey performed a dance to the popular YouTube song, “I’m Farming and I Grow It,” along with two of her friends.
Gustafson then danced with her friend to “It’s Raining Men” before Caul and a friend danced to the new “Footloose” song, “Fake ID.”
Finally, Wells, along with two friends, performed a short skit about what really happened to Humpty Dumpty.
“I’m very, very happy. I was not expecting it at all,” Woolsey said about being crowned the 2012 queen.
She said the best part was “probably the talent, the entertainment night was so much fun.”
“It was an adrenaline rush, it was awesome.
“Yesterday, my stomach was in knots,” she admitted. “But once I got here, I was calm.
“I was like, ‘Okay, I’ve been practising my butt off, I can do this!’”
To the organizers, Woolsey remarked, “Thank you for this experience; it’s all been such a whirlwind, but so much fun.
“It’s a good experience for everyone,” she reiterated. “I would recommend it to anyone who would want to try.”
Woolsey also was following the fair’s theme, “A Family Tradition,” as two of her older sisters ran in the pageant before, having being crowned Queen and First Princess.
Gustafson, meanwhile, said she was very excited about being crowned First Princess.
“I’m really happy, and proud of everybody,” she remarked.
She echoed Woolsey and encouraged other girls to get involved. “You’ll have a lot of fun doing it!” she enthused.
“I feel excited, but sad that it’s over,” noted Caul. “It’s a great experience.
“I encourage girls to sign up for it or get involved.
“I’m looking forward to helping the queen [contestants] out next year,” she added. “It will be a lot of fun getting to know them.”
Pageant committee member Mary Croswell, along with Sis McCormick and Debbie Carlson, thanked judges Joyce Meyers, Brenda Elias, Jen Azvedo, and April Simmons for all of the time they spent with the girls over the summer.
Croswell, who has sat on the committee for more than seven years, said the competition “went really well, we had a really good group of girls.”
“They were very prepared and organized, and were helpful with anything we needed them to do,” Croswell noted.
“I have just really enjoyed the girls this year, like I do every year.”
The committee also thanked all of the sponsors for the pageant, who donated many, many prizes, as well as the Emo Legion for donating prizes for the Mini-Queen and Mini-King contest held Thursday.
The three boys and four girls vying for the mini-crowns were asked questions by Heyens, with Jaxson Strachan and Alexis Latter taking home the crowns.
Strachan said his favourite part of the fair is the stock cars and the Dragon roller-coaster while Latter won over the judges by singing.
Latter said her favourite part was “When I sang the ‘Itsy Bitsy Spider Song.’”
