RR Rec. Report: Adult hockey league set to return to the area
By Kam Kuzyk
Rec. Director
As the warm weather goes, so does our fall programs at the Rainy River Recreation Centre. Thanks to the new Youth Programmer, Justin Wagner, and all our new equipment (baseball bats, ball machines, racquets, etc), the programs were a huge success. Our youth ball and tennis programs yielded great participation and it couldn’t have been done without the help of our volunteer coaches.
Our winter programs are now taking place. Intramural hockey and Basketball begin soon with registration nights on October 23 & 24 from 5-7pm at the Rec. Centre. Hockey will run every Friday from Nov. 2 until the ice is taken out while basketball runs every Monday and Thursday from Nov. 5 until December 20. Intramural hockey is for children 18 and under. Basketball is for grades 1-8.
Also running this winter, in collaboration with the Rainy River Public Library, is many birding opportunities. On October 19 from 1:30pm-2:30pm at the Public Library is Birding Buddies. This family and youth oriented activity introduces birding as a recreational activity. Registration is free and can be done at the Rainy River Public Library.
Other events and activities that are taking place at the Rec. Centre include the After School Program, Community Kitchen, Diabetes “Clothesline” Drop-off, Healthy Food Box Pick-up, and the Bottle Return.
The After School Program uses the Recreation Centre for some of their activities and as a pick-up location.
The Community Kitchen runs once a month (October 25) at the Rec. Centre from 12-3pm.
The last day to drop off clothes for the Diabetes Association is Thursday, October 18.
Bottle Return is open every Tuesday and Thursday from 2-6pm.
Making a return this winter at the Rec. Centre is an adult hockey league. After quite some time, there will be a 4-6 team league in town. Any players that would like to play and do not have a team can contact the Rec. Centre and we will add you to our roster. Right now, it looks like we could have two teams out of Rainy River! Check out www.rrhl.ca for more information.
Keep active and come use the Rec. Centre’s Fitness Room.
Stay tuned for all of our upcoming activities and events. Keep an eye out for our posters or add us on Facebook. If you have any questions about upcoming activities or would like to suggest something new, call or email us at the Rec. Centre (852-4446 or rainyriverrec@tbaytel.net).
Last but not least, I would like to express my grattitude to all the volunteers who have helped out this year. Youth sports and events such as Railroad Daze, Labour Day Fastball, and the Walleye Tournament could not function without your help.
