NWHU issues warning about flu vaccines
News Release
NWHU
The Northwestern Health Unit issued an Influenza Vaccine Advisory this morning to all local health care providers. The advisory alerts those who give flu shots to stop using two products used to prevent seasonal influenza: Fluad and Agriflu.
This follows notification that Health Canada has suspended use of the vaccines due to particles being found in a small number of lots in Europe. The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care is monitoring the situation and has directed Ontario’s health units and health care providers to comply with the direction to temporarily stop use.
The Northwestern Health Unit received a small supply of the Fluad and Agriflu vaccine to use in its annual flu immunization program, and some of that vaccine was distributed to health care facilities in the region. The health unit is no longer distributing or administering the two vaccines, but is confident to go ahead with flu clinics as planned throughout the region.
Donna Stanley, Manager of Infectious Diseases states “we have enough other flu vaccine (Vaxigrip and Fluviral) so that everyone who wants a flu vaccine can get one”. She goes on to say “a flu shot is still the best way to protect yourself, your loved ones and your community from influenza - a serious and sometimes fatal disease”.
