Carl Selman, 74
In loving memory of Carl Selman, age 74 years, who passed away in the Dryden Regional Health Centre with his family at his side Tuesday, January 1st, 2013.
Carl was born in Rainy River June 18, 1938 to George and Roxanne Selman.
He was the youngest of 2, Roy Selman being the oldest brother by 11 months. Years later the Selmans opened their home to another son John whom they adopted. We often heard stories of his childhood in Sleeman, of the little school house, cutting and hauling wood, hunting, trapping and helping out on their small farm.
Carl and his brother had a wood hauling truck which often brought him to Fort Frances, where he met his future wife Sally. They dated for 4 years and then were married May 7, 1960.
They moved to Dryden as there were work opportunities at the pipeline and later the paper mill. They rented a place to live, later on buying a small house behind the mill.
They were blessed with 4 children, Linda, David, Carla and Colleen; however their son David passed away January 1, 1963. Through their daughters they welcomed their 2 sons-in-law, Stuart and Rheal, whom they learned to love as their own.
Carl and Sally were also blessed with 3 grandchildren, Alana, Alyx and Stephan, whom they enjoyed taking on their many camping and fishing trips as well as lots of overnight stays with Grammy and Grampy.
Carl was a great father and role model to his girls teaching them to respect and enjoy nature by bringing them on family camping and fishing adventures in the bush. Later, buying a camper and continuing to go to Godson Lake as well as Blue Lake and Aaron Park on his holidays and weekends off in the summer.
Carl retired from the mill at 59 years old only to be diagnosed with COPD. He still was able to enjoy camping, fishing and the odd gambling bus trip with his wife for many years after that.
Fifty years to the day of his son’s passing January 1, 2013, Carl left this world to be with his son.
Carl was a good father, a loving husband, a gentle, calm man with a great sense of humour which, when you would least expect, he would have you laughing.
Carl will be missed by his loving wife of 52 years, his family and many lifelong friends.
A Memorial Funeral Mass to celebrate the life of Carl Selman was held Friday, January 4th at 10:00 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church with Rev. Alan Campeau officiating. Interment of ashes followed in the Dryden Cemetery.
