Hilda Elvira Mykytyn
August 4, 1933 –
February 17, 2013

At the Riverside Healthcare Facility in Rainy River, ON on February 17, 2013 Hilda Elvira Mykytyn, 79 peacefully passed away with her loving family by her side. She fought a long 17 year battle with Alzheimer disease before she won and got to go home to be with our Lord.
Hilda was born a twin, on August 4, 1933 in Sleeman, ON to Arnold and Alice Kaus. She lived in Blue Twp., until she married the love of her life Peter Mykytyn on May 29, 1953 and they moved to Atwood Twp. They had two children Robin Roger and Marilyn Melita. Hilda and Peter farmed beef cattle until she was 60 years old and they retired. As a young girl Hilda worked in a resort on Lake of the Woods and in a logging camp helping the cook. While going to high school in Rainy River she started to work for Mrs. Ozie in the restaurant. After they married, the opportunity came for Peter and Hilda to operate a restaurant for a few years. Later, they purchased a grocery store with Hilda’s sister and brother in law Elma and Ron Miller. Later they sold the grocery store and the new owners hired her to manage the business. When they wanted her to travel for her job she resigned and went back to waitressing which she enjoyed more. She loved to work and be around people. Hilda and Peter built their retirement home in Rainy River by the school. They wanted to see their grandchildren every day and feed them a hot lunch. They became very close with their grandchildren and some of their friends. Hilda enjoyed gardening and was an active member of the Luthern Woman’s Missionary League and the Ladies Hospital Auxiliary until Alzheimer’s set in. She knew she had the disease and it was very difficult for her.
Hilda is survived by her daughter Marilyn (Allan) Olson, grandchildren Stacey Lyn Olson, Kevin Olson (Alesia Ellis) and great grandchildren Megan Olson and Tanner Ellis, sister Betty (George) Coulson, brother in laws Ron Miller, Bill (Beulah) Olson, John (Gisela) Mykytyn, sister in laws Elsie Thompson, Liz Weston and Sonya Lenchyshyn. She was predeceased by her husband Peter, infant son Robin Roger, parents Arnold and Alice Kaus, sister Elma Miller, twin sister Ella Olson and brother in laws Emmette Thompson, Tom Weston and Lawrence Lenchyshyn. Hilda was a wonderful and fun loving mother, grandmother and aunt. She always liked a good joke and could twist a phrase. She also liked to laugh and dance. Even when her memory was going, she would dance and hum with whoever would dance with her. She will be sadly missed and always remembered for the love she gave us. The funeral was held February 26, 2013 at 11:00 am. in the Rainy River Evangelical Covenant Church with Pastor William Moeller, Jr. officiating. Interment will take place at a later date in the Forest Lawn Cemetery, Rainy River Cemetery.
