50 years of men’s fastball! Who would have thought it would last so long!
The Rainy River District Fastball League begins its 50th season this week with 13 teams on tap!
In the early days there were two leagues in the district. One in the west end and one in the east end. But as population numbers declined and got older the two were eventually merged into one.
For a long time there were less than 10 teams in the RRDFL. But in the past few years the game has gained popularity and is now 13 teams strong.
They hail from Rainy River, Barwick, Couchiching, Sabaskong, Stratton, Manitou, Big Island, Big Grassy, Fort Frances and Northwest Bay. Some communities even have two teams like it was back in the day! They are Fort Frances and Sabaskong. The teams competing this year are Barwick Blue Knights, Beef’s Warriors, Sabaskong Lakers, Stratton, Manitou, Sight and Sound, Dawson, Northwest Bay, Couchiching, Big Island, Rainy River Royals, Sabaskong Cubs and Big Grassy.
Games are at 7 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursdays all summer long. The schedule for this week is:
Tuesday
Sabaskong Cubs at RR
Barwick at Dawson
Beef’s Warriors at Sabaskong Lakers
Stratton at Manitou
Sight and Sound at NW Bay
Big Island at Couchiching
Thursday
Dawson at Big Grassy
