Abattoir can now kill chickens

News Release

Donations from the public to the non-profit Abattoir in Emo for chicken processing equipment have now surpassed the $5,000 target. Abattoir President Bill Darby stated, “We wish to sincerely thank all members of the public who have donated to this project. In response, we are announcing today that the Abattoir hopes to begin processing poultry in early July.”
“We still have to purchase and install the equipment, and obtain final approval from the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food, but it looks good, Darby said. “We already have conditional approval from OMAF, he added.”
For chickens the Abattoir Board has decided on a base slaughter fee of $4.50 per bird. For turkeys, the base fee will be $0.50 per lb of carcass weight. A penalty fee of $1.00 per chicken and turkey will be imposed if the birds have a lot of pin feathers that are difficult to remove.
Poultry will be processed on separate days from other species, and poultry bookings will have to be scheduled in advance. Producers will be encouraged to book early.
In different news, the Abattoir has announced a Special Offer for Non-Members. Beginning on June 1st, any Non-Member bringing livestock to the abattoir will have the difference between their non-member fees and the regular member fees credited against the cost of a new membership. Non-Member fees are 25% higher than member fees.
