NDP to support Liberal budget
News Release
Ont. NDP.
QUEEN’S PARK – NDP Leader Andrea Horwath says she’s proud of what New Democrats have achieved this Legislative session and will ensure passage of the Budget so they can deliver results for families concerned about jobs for youth, wait times for home care, the high cost of auto insurance and making government accountable.
“Last January, I made it clear that people wanted action on jobs, health care and the growing cost of everyday life. We said we’d work hard to deliver results for them and we have done exactly that,” said Horwath. “We will pass this Budget based on the commitments this government has made and we will keep working hard to ensure promises are kept.”
After the government put forward its Budget, Horwath consulted with Ontarians and put forward positive proposals to make the Budget accountable: including a Financial Accountability Office modeled on Ottawa’s Parliamentary Budget Office and ensuring new toll roads won’t proceed without a vote in the Legislature.
In the lead-up to the Budget, the NDP Leader laid out clear achievable goals for the government: make life affordable by reducing auto insurance premiums by 15 per cent, improve healthcare by creating a five-day guarantee for home care service, and help young people find jobs with a First Start jobs program that will help companies ready to hire and train young workers.
“We’ve worked hard to deliver results,” said Horwath. “It’s not everything we wanted. It’s not everything people have told us they need. But we’re proud to deliver results that will make people’s lives better and government more accountable.”
