Two men go missing on area waterways

(EMO, ON) - On July 14, 2013 at approximately 7:02 pm, officers of the Rainy River District Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Emo Fire Department and Rainy River District Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded to the report of a missing 27 year old male. Emergency personnel were called to assist after two males attempted to swim out into the Rainy River and return back to the Emo Public Docks, a distance of approximately 200 feet. One male returned to the Emo public docks while the second male went under the water and failed to surface.
Police have conducted a shoreline search of the area. OPP Marine officers are continuing to patrol the area with the assistance of the Koochiching Sheriff’s Department (United States of America). OPP Underwater Search and Recovery is responding to assist with the investigation.
The name of the male is not being released at this time. Further information will be released as it becomes available.
(KENORA, ON) - On July 13, 2013 at approximately 9:10 am, officers of the Kenora Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Kenora Fire and Rescue Service as well as Kenora Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded to the report of a missing 20 year old male. An OPP officer was flagged down after witnesses observed a male jump into the water from the Darlington Bay Bridge (Winnipeg River) and failed to surface.
On Sunday, July 14, 2013 shortly before 11 am the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Underwater Search and Rescue Unit recovered the body of a male from the Winnipeg River. The male jumped into the water from the Darlington Bay Bridge on Saturday, July 13 approximately 9:10 am and failed to surface. The male has been identified as 20 year old John Savoyard of Minaki. A post mortem examination is scheduled for Monday morning at the Lake of The Woods District Hospital in Kenora.
The OPP remind the public to practice water safety and exercise caution when swimming in unknown waters.
