Locals kick butt at tournies

Kicking it up a notch, four members of the Pollard Martial Arts Academy brought home some hardware from two recent Tae Kwon Do tournaments.
Shannon Jonasson, 24, of Rainy River, Kerry Zub, 29 of Fort Frances and Kevin Wiersema, 16, of Rainy River all competed on April 25th in Winnipeg at the Kang’s Academy Can/Am Games. All competed in sparring matches based on their belt, age, weight and sex.
Wiersema who has a Red Belt with a Black Stripe won a silver. Zub who has a White Belt won a bronze. Jonasson who has a Green Belt with a Blue Stripe won gold.
On May 14th Zub, Jonasson and John Jonassen, 13, of Rainy River, travelled to the Manitoba Tae Kwon Do Championships. John has a Green Belt with a Blue Stripe. All three competed in sparring and forms.
Shannon brought home gold again in sparring. John earned a bronze and Zub picked up a silver in sparring.
In forms John won gold, Shannon and Zub both received bronze.
Their instructor, Chris Pollard, said, “They did excellent! For a small club from a small town I can’t complain.”
Pollard Martial Arts Academy has about 15-20 members that train regularly throughout the school year.
