The Rainy River Senior Girls Owls Basketball Team is All Ontario bound!
The girls played host to the Hornepayne Hawks last Thursday to compete for the NWOSSA regional title and a berth to the OFSAAs in Sault Ste. Marie later this week.
Game 1 was held Thursday morning and it was close. After the first quarter it was 6-2 for RRHS and 17-12 at the half for RRHS.
Things got even closer in the third quarter when it was tied 22-22 at the beginning of the fourth. It would go back and forth and was 24-24 with about 2 minutes left in the game. RRHS would come out on top in the end 32-26.
“The girls played pretty good as a whole. They struggled with their shooting which is unusual for them but their passing was amazing! Hornepayne did a great job of shutting down the middle and stopping one of high scorers Myan Miller. But she used that as an opportunity to draw defense and pass out to her teammates in order to let them score,” said RRHS coach Rebecca Tolen.
The second game in the best of three was held at 4 p.m. Thursday. The Owls lead 11-6 after one with the Hawks only connecting on two baskets, but they were three point shots. After the second quarter RRHS lead 21-14, again with one of the Hawk’s baskets coming from way outside due to the strong defense the Owls set up in the key.
The Owls kept their defense strong and continued to chip away widening their lead to 29-18 after the third quarter. Final score was 36-22 and the Owls earned a trip to the Sault this Thurs. and Friday.
After the second game Thurs. the team held a spaghetti dinner fundraiser that was well attended. More fundraising efforts will continue help defray costs of going to the All Ontarios.
Good luck girls!
