Ice out trivia time!

Well it finally happened last Wednesday, April 16th! The Rainy River opened in front of the Town of Rainy River.
Well that date is close to the latest date on record, it is not uncommon for it to go out the third week of April. In fact it has gone out 13 times out of the last 79 during that week!
I know people were thinking it should be going out at the end of March, but the matter of fact, it actually tends to go out in April the majority of time.
Here are some stats and perhaps some trivia for you buffs to absorb:
The earliest ice out date was Feb. 27, 1998. The latest was Apr. 20, 1950.
It has gone out 59 times in April, 19 in March and once in Feb.
The most common day for the ice to go out is Apr. 11 (8 times).
The second most common day is Apr. 3 (5 times).
The third most common days are Apr. 13 and 14 (both 4 times).
It has gone out 19 times the first week of Apr, 25 times the second week of Apr. and 13 times the third week of Apr.
Another interesting fact is that during the dirty 30s the ice went out late 7 out of ten years from 1934-44. Even though they had hot dry summers, the late ice out dates suggest longer and colder winters... could we be in for a hot dry summer after this winter?
–Until then,
