October 17-24th is Canadian Library Week and the Rainy River Public Library has a whole slate of fun activities scheduled for the public to enjoy.
RRPL Board Chair Terri Anne Lundgren said things will kick off next Tuesday with a special musical guest (yet to be named) at the weekly kids story hour which runs at 10:30 a.m. every Tuesday. It is free and geared towards preschoolers and kindergarten ages.
That night a special treat for people of all ages will be held at the Rainy River Community Centre. The Borderland Orchestra will be holding a special fundraising concert. Admission will be $5 and all the proceeds will go towards the RRPL building fund. Lundgren said, “We are looking to relocate and have written to the town informing of this.” There will be a penny table and a tea at the concert.
Starting on the 13th, 14th and 20th RRHS student and CAP coordinator at the Library, Ethan Swentik, will be hosting cyber camps to teach people basic computer skills. There is a one time $5 charge to attend the camps.
Other activities are also planned to highlight the library late in the month. On Oct. 27th a special pajama party story hour will be held in conjunction with the local Early Years Centre at the Library (starting at 10:30 a.m.). Again this activity is free of charge.
On October 29th family tree buffs will be treated to a genealogy seminar by Marjorie Stinzi. People need to sign up for it by calling or stopping into the RRPL. Their number is 852-3375.
Lundgren said the library has been very busy being proactive. They are currently working on a Trillium grant application to improve the library and raised over $650 at their annual book sale.
They have also been lobbying the government on the importance of having an Ontario Library Service office in Northwestern Ontario. The office in Thunder Bay was closed recently and all services are now coming from Sudbury.
The library also received a $200 grant recently to use towards the very successful Book and a Bit program. Last year elementary students were treated to a guest reader and a nutritious snack once a week over several weeks. Lundgren said they hope to get the program running again in November.
People are encouraged to come in and check out the library. Recently a high profile regional citizen joined. MP Ken Boschoff is now a member of the RRPL.
