Rainy to be on t.v Toronto station featuring Yonge St.
Ken Johnston
Yonge Street connects us with Toronto.
With that in mind reporter Antony Robart was in Rainy River last week shooting footage and interviewing townspeople for a week long series on the world’s longest street.
Robart is with the Global Television Network and said he is driving from Rainy River to Toronto along Yonge St. looking for more of the unique rural aspects of the roadway. “This street helps bind the province together, but most people in Toronto do not know about the towns outside the city.”
On his list of places to stop, besides Rainy River, are the towns of Cochrane, Swastika and Thunder Bay. Yes there is a town named Swastika.
While in Rainy River Robart interviewed former Mayor Gord Armstrong who was at the helm when the 200th anniversary of Yonge St. was celebrated. He also interviewed Clinton Park who is 101 and his wife Doris.
He interviewed Record editor Ken Johnston and also taped the Borderland Orchestra performing in Rainy River. He also stayed a night at the Border Gasthaus and taped some footage there; the beginning of Yonge St.
Robart said, “Often we only get to these communities when there is a crisis or tragedy. This is a good opportunity to explore personalities (of the communities).”
The series may air as soon as next week, but will likely be the week after. When it does it will be on the Global evening news from Toronto between 5:30 and 6:30 eastern time. He said he would let the Record know so its readers can be alerted to watch for it.
