Coach Sariina Kalli’s Comments
The numbers on the girls’ side have dwindled from 10 runners to just seven, as three runners are out with season-ending injuries. This top group, however, pulled out a great performance at the section course preview in Park Rapids Monday (Oct. 17).
Although no girl earned a PR on the loopy and hilly course, junior Madie Heinrich continued to lead the team with another top-ten performance. She finished 10th, just 34 seconds off the leader (Kelsey Aune of East Grand Forks). Heinrich and freshman Brenley Anderson were both faster than this meet last season, with Anderson finishing with a near-PR of 18:33.
Unlike the girls’ team, the boys were able to put 11 runners in the varsity/JV race, and four of them recorded personal best times. Sophomore Andrew Friesen paced the team with a one-second PR of 17:06 – good for 7th place. Seniors Kyle Huerd and Brendin Ketchum were 13 and 12 seconds better than any other race, and freshman Taylor Poole cut another 14 seconds off his PR, to finish in 20:29 (Poole’s best time of last season was 24:54). These last three PRs are impressive in that they have really poured it on the last few weeks and the hard work in practice and races is paying off with excellent times.
Placing third of 13 full teams is a great achievement for this team, but since Park Rapids is the site of the Section 8A meet, the boys were hoping for more. Warroad and Perham have dominated most meets this season, but Lake of the Woods isn’t out yet. The gaps are closing and the desire to push the limits is there.

Coach Sariina Kalli’s Comments
In his last race of the season, seventh-grader Ryan Cooper earned his best 3200-meter time of the year, crossing the line in 15 minutes, 23 seconds – a 5-second PR.
Despite having raced in Park Rapids the day before, all seven varsity girls ran faster in Bemidji. Junior Madie Heinrich pulled her second-fastest time ever, placing 6th in 16:06. She was the first section 8A runner to cross the line and she’s got a lot of confidence going into next week’s section meet.
On the other hand, back-to-back racing for the boys gave all but one of them a slower time than Park Rapids. Still, they raced in Bemidji and were gunning for Crosby-Ironton, the only other Section 8A team at the meet (and the reason we did the back-to-back meets). Freshman Andrew Friesen and senior Tyler Ketchum went head-to-head with C-I’s second and third runners. Juniors Vincent Scott and Dylan Davis raced each other to the line and prevented two C-I runners from finishing ahead of them. Senior Jay Neilson closed the gap between our fourth and fifth runners to only 16 seconds, whereas he’s been 30- to 45-seconds back in other meets. Junior Joe Cooper, running with a sore knee, held on enough to race almost 30 seconds faster than the day before.
Once again, the team placing wasn’t what the LWRR boys wanted, but the racing strategy improves with every meet. We’ll see if it’s enough at next week’s Section 8A meet in Park Rapids.
The Section 8A Meet is FRIDAY, OCT. 28, at Park Rapids. The top two teams and top ten individuals advance to the State Meet in Northfield Nov. 5.
