Coach Sariina Kallie’s Comments
The season came to an abrupt end for all but one Lake of the Woods runner at the Section 8A meet in Park Rapids Friday (Oct. 28).
Canadian freshman Andrew Friesen placed sixth at the meet, with a time of 17 minutes, 17 seconds - just 25 seconds off the winner, Moses Heppner of Warroad. Teammate Tyler Ketchum, a senior, missed joining Friesen for a return trip to the State Meet by only two seconds, placing 11th in 17:32. (The top ten individuals advance.) Friesen and Ketchum led a strong Bears team into tough section competition, but the pieces just didn’t fall where we needed them to fall. Still, Lake of the Woods-Rainy River placed 4th of 17 teams, and all seven boys were in the top half of the 111-runner field.
No, the season didn’t go like we hoped, but I had nine runners who were with me until the end, each pushing themselves to do what had to be done. It was the most successful competitive season this boys‚ team has ever had.
Junior Madie Heinrich was 40 seconds short of qualifying for the state meet as an individual. She led the Bears with a 16th place finish and a time of 16 minutes, 39 seconds. Madie’s had a great year, breaking a long-standing PR by mid-season and keeping her times down the second half of the year. This just wasn’t her time to advance.
Junior Jennifer Blodgett had the team’s only PR “boys or girls” as she finished under 20 minutes (19:50) for only the second time of her career. She also raced almost two minutes faster at sections than she did Oct. 17 on the same course. Having struggled with asthma all year, and a knee injury recently, this PR is especially rewarding for her.
Although short of PRs, five more girls ran between 12 seconds and 1:26 faster than Oct. 17. Eighth grader Jennie Buegler was only 2 seconds off her best 4000-meter time, while freshman Brenley Anderson was only 4 seconds of her PR. Each girl stepped it up in the last race of the season.
There are no seniors on the girls team, and if the experience and late-season success of its young runners is any indication, good things may be in store for them.
