Odetta Vera Freier passed away due to failing health on February 19, 2016 at the LakeWood Health Center at the age of 84. Odetta was born to Ammon and Pearl (Barnum) Stowell on July 19, 1931 in Fargo, ND.
Over the years, Odetta held various jobs, including, Yellow Cab in Minneapolis, Gambles Skogmo, a nurse’s aide at the Baudette Hospital, and for the labeling department at Solvay Pharmaceuticals. She was one of the co-founders and driving force behind the Lake of the Woods Humane Society.
Odetta was well known for her love and animals, caregiving for other people, and her fabulous talents in cake decorating. She enjoyed puzzles, traveling, music, square dancing, baking, riding her Harley (golf cart), flying with brother-in-law, John Welberg, spending time at the Humane Society and giving her beloved kitty, Cocoa rides in her van. She will be sadly missed by all.
She is survived by her sisters, Barbara (John) Welberg of Baudette and Weslaco, TX and Donna (Peter) Gawerluk of Baudette and Minneapolis, MN; sister-in-law, Caroline Stowell; brother-in-law, Dave Oneschuk; step-daughter, Debby Freier of Texas; several nieces and nephews that were very dear to her.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Roland Desorcy of Rainy River, ONT and Alvin Freier; special friend, Arnold Lund; sisters, Zella Ann, Wilda, and Helen Stowell and recently, Doris Oneschuk; brothers, Arnold Stowell and Chuck Stowell; step-son, Ronald Freier; and nephew, Charles Stowell.
Memorial services were held on Monday, February 22nd at 11 AM at First Congregational Church in Baudette. Visitation was one hour prior, with interment at Elm Park Cemetery in Baudette at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial to the Lake of the Woods Humane Society or the First Congregational Church in Baudette.
