Lloyd Gallatin, 89

With heavy hearts, Reginald and Margaret Weeks announce the passing of their beloved friend Lloyd Gallatin of Bergland, Ontario on Friday, February 26, 20l6 at the Rainy River Hospital.
Lloyd was born on February 21, 1927 at Clayton, Kansas, U.S. to William and Mildred Gallatin (nee Hayes), the third of four sons. Lloyd was predeceased by his parents, brothers and a granddaughter and his beloved second wife of forty-two years, Anneliese (nee Gunneman).
Lloyd worked on the family farm until he was nineteen when he enlisted in the United States Army. As a veteran of WWII, he served in the South Pacific spending three years in Japan with the occupational forces where he rose to the rank of Sergeant in charge of a large motor pool. He was honourably discharged in September 1948.
Lloyd held several jobs after the war including working on a steel mill in Illinois and later in the mail department at Union Station in Kansas City Missouri for the railroad. It was there he met and married Anneliese.
Together they immigrated to Canada in March 1969 and homesteaded in Dewart Township north of Strachan Road. Always a farmer, he cleared the surrounding bush and grew crops unusual to the area. He also got into the wood cutting business and hauled numerous cords of pulp wood to the Fort Frances Mill. Lloyd also ran a successful trapline and it was his expertise as a trapper that led to contract work with the Ministry of Natural Resources as their predator control officer. Many local farmers relied on him to alleviate their wolf predadation problems. He eventually became a Deputy Game Warden and worked for the Ministry until retiring at age 65.
Lloyd loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing and trapping. He was a whiz at fixing vehicle motors and his equipment around his farm. He can be credited for re-establishing the resident Canada Goose population we have today. Numerous school children and boy scouts remember visiting the Gallatin residence on the Little Grassy River to see the nesting geese.
He also had a love for firearms. He was an exceptional marksman, dedicated hand loader, and self taught gunsmith. Lloyd was a proud life member of the NRA.
Lloyd always had a vegetable garden that seemed to mysteriously expand in size yearly. He enjoyed canning his homegrown produce. Always generous he gladly shared his crops with neighbours near and far.
He will be lovingly remembered by his four children, Neva (Ed) Miller, Kathy (Kenneth) Gordon, Kerry (Debbie) Gallatin of Riverton, Wyoming, and David(Carol) Gallatin of Denver, Colorado. Also by his stepson Wilhelm (Henrietta) Thierling of Kansas City, Missouri. He will be sadly missed by numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and twin great-great grandchildren as well as close friends too numerous too mention.
Cremation has taken place an there will be no service as per Lloyd’s request. If desired memorial donations my be made to the Rainy River Hospital Auxiliary c/o Northridge Funeral Home, P.O. Box 89, Emo, On P0W 1E0. Online condolences may be offered at www.northridgefuneralhome.com
