Debbie Ewald profile

Debbie Ewald
(incumbent
councillor)

Political/Community Experience:

I have served as town councillor for three years, Union President and Vice President for 16 years, Secretary for RR Curling Club for five years, belong to the Legion Ladies Aux, and have served on area boards such as the Atikokan Crisis Centre.

Why are you running for office?

After serving as a councillor, I have a better understanding of the many issues facing Rainy River. This community needs leaders who have the Town’s interests as their priority. I have proven leadership skills and will work hard to advance Rainy River’s interests at all levels.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing Rainy River?

Rainy River has many challenges facing it. The major challenge as I see it is the declining population, including our young people moving away. We need to attract industry and employment opportunities to Rainy River in order to increase our population and give people a great place to live and work. In order to maintain what we have in this community we must work smarter in our operations.

If elected what do you plan to do about it?

Firstly, I would ensure the Town’s operations and facilities are run as efficiently as possible.

Secondly, we need to develop a strategic plan which identifies what projects need to be undertaken, a plan to complete the project and checks to ensure the project is either completed or on track. This plan would include projects under infrastructure, economic development, beautification, as well as recreation centre, library, fire dept. to name a few.

To move forward we must identify goals and work towards achieving them.

Tell us about yourself:

I have lived in and around Rainy River for 25 years. I am employed at the Northwestern Health Unit. I have two grown children. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, gardening, needlepoint and travelling. I enjoy new challenges and meeting new people. I have the time and energy to work hard for Rainy River.

Do you have a plan or platform you are running on?

Accountable and progressive would describe my platform. We need to be accountable with our tax dollars in the day to day operations and yet plan and work to move the Town forward.

Other comments about the election or yourself?

I would encourage all citizens to become involved in the community. If people have a special interest, such as economic development, recreation or library, etc., they should offer their ideas and time to the community. If Rainy River is going to succeed, we must all work together.
