Four local curlers are heading to a national championship after winning the Northern Ontario Firefighters Playdowns in Red Lake over the weekend.
The Tim Nordin rink, comprised of Nordin at skip, Dale Morrison-third, Dave Seguin-second and Dale Ossachuk-lead, represented both Rainy River and Dawson Volunteer Fire Depts. over the weekend. A total of 22 teams from as far away as Marathon and Thunder Bay competed there.
Nordin’s rink played six games and were undefeated. “The calibre there was not as high as some of the other events I have been in, but there were a lot of competitive teams there,” said Nordin Monday. However, he is expecting that the level of competition will go way up at the Nationals.
The National Firefighter Championships will be held in Thunder Bay from March 23-April 1st and Nordin’s team will represent Northern Ontario there, after they defeated Ignace in the finals 7-0. “They quit after six ends,” said a jubilant Nordin.
As for the costs Nordin said the Northern Ontario Firefighters Curling Association will help them out but he said they were told it will probably cost each member of the team about $1,000.
But Nordin said the cost is not a deterrent. “We are really excited about this opportunity and can’t wait!”
