The Rainy River High School (RRHS) Boys Curling team earned a spot at the upcoming NWOSSAAs March 5-6 in Thunder Bay.
The rink skipped by Mitch Seguin, Kyle Miller-third, Jared McQuaker-second and Matt Johnson-lead, went 3-2 at the NORWOSSAA playdowns on Feb. 19-20 in Kenora. After regular play there was a two way tie for 2nd place between RRHS and Kenora’s Beaver Brae. It came down to the last shot in an extra end with RRHS winning 7-5.
In round robin play the results were as follows:
RRHS defeated Thomas Aquinas (Kenora) 14-2. T.A. resigned after six ends.
RRHS defeated Sioux Lookout 8-0 in three ends.
RRHS defeated Atikokan 16-1 in six ends.
Beaver Brae defeated RRHS 7-4.
Fort Frances defeated RRHS 9-3.
The boys finished with a silver medal and a spot at NWOSSAAs.
This is the second year to NWOSSAAs for all of the team except Matt Johnson. This is his first year. Last year the team won NORWOSSAAs but finished 4th at NWOSSAAs.
The RRHS Girls Curling team finished NORWOSSAA playdowns with a bronze but did not advance to NWOSSAAs.
The girls team, consisting of Dayna Seguin, Carly Nordin, Alyshia Langlais, and Alysaa Jodoin, curled very well, Unfortunately, they missed moving on to NWOSSAA’s by a single position.
If the boys win at NWOSSAAs they will advance to the All Ontarios in Mississauga at the end of March.
Good luck boys!
